Understanding class and event levels

Event listings show level labels on classes and workshops. These describe the instruction level organizers expect — not a test you must pass to attend.
Common level labels
| Label | What it generally means |
|---|---|
| All Levels | Open to everyone; material is accessible to newcomers and experienced dancers alike |
| Beginning | Aimed at people new to the material or the style |
| Beyond Beginning | Some prior familiarity assumed — not a first-ever class |
| Intermediate | Expects solid fundamentals in the style |
| Int/Adv | Intermediate and advanced material combined |
| Advanced | For experienced dancers |
| See Description | Read the event details for specifics |
These labels appear on the listing itself. They are separate from the beginner-friendly tag, which signals that newcomers are explicitly welcome regardless of level label.
Beginner-friendly vs level labels
An event can be beginner-friendly even when the level says "Intermediate" — the tag and the level label mean different things:
- Beginner-friendly — newcomers are welcome; the atmosphere is newcomer-aware.
- Level label — the instruction content organizers plan to cover.
When you are brand new, look for beginner-friendly events and All Levels or Beginning classes.
